Time for Wine-dreams, Time for Calafuria Dreaming!

It is official: Calafuria Rosé Tormaresca 2018 is now widely available in the UK.

There has been an increased interest for rosé wines in last few years. Needless to say, Provence rosé is the first thought when it comes to this fast-growing category but there are other regions all over the world where there is a long tradition for rosé wine and also new trends coming up. Italy is one of those. And If you say rosé in Italy then you say Puglia.

Puglia is one of Italy’s warmest regions, it is ‘the heel’ of the Italian boot and sits astride the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The soils here are rich and fertile, comprised primarily of calcareous limestone. This is where the Antinori family chose to be to make a wine meant to become the most renowned Italian rosé.

Calafuria is made by Tormaresca in Masseria Maìme Estate which is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Upper Salento. The estate extends along the Adriatic coast and covers an area of about 500 hectares, 350 of which are planted with vines and 85 with olive groves. It was first released in 2008 and today – only 10 years later- it is the most loved rosé in Italy and the only Italian rosé featuring in the 2018 top values rosé on Wine Spectator last year.

Paler than any other Apulian rosé it is although a real expression of the region’s character. Peach petal pink in colour, this wine shows intense yet delicate fragrances of strawberry, pink grapefruit, peaches and violets. The flavour is fresh and balanced with savoury notes and excellent aromatic persistence.

But in Italy Calafuria is not only a wine: it has become a lifestyle. Besides being a delicious drink to enjoy as aperitif on the beach or with a variety of dishes, in the last four years Tormaresca has also launched a limited-edition label for the magnum formats which every year wine lovers are thrilled to get. Valeria Petrone, acclaimed Italian illustrator whose work includes children’s books, advertising, paintings and sculptures, designed the first three labels which were showed at PhEST – the international festival of photography and art in Monopoli (Bari) last autumn. Colourful, fresh labels which were the perfect companion to a fulfilling wine experience.

This year label (which will be available from late spring) was designed by another extremely talented Italian artist, Davide Bonazzi who aims to create clever visual solutions to represent complex topics, as well as narrative, witty images. His style combines digital media with textures of scanned found objects, in order to give his illustrations a warm and evocative atmosphere. Three different versions of the label will be released in a special 3 magnums case.
