Heart to Heart with Richard Rose, Elgin Vintners

Ahead of Power to the Pinot 2 we caught up with Richard Rose, General Manager of South African producer Elgin Vintners. Among other things we discussed their exciting plans to plant a new single-plot of Pinot Noir.

‘This year (2018) we are planting three hectares of Pinot Noir, by 2020 we will have single-vineyard Pinot Noir’ he explains, ‘The area is on north-facing slopes on the south bank of the Palmiet River and it has excellent cold units that accumulate in the winter.’

Since the turn of the century winemakers have been taking advantage of Elgin’s temperate conditions, afforded by the high altitudes and cooling winds from the Atlantic, to grow Burgundian varieties.

As important as vineyard aspect and overhead conditions are, Richard adds that soil diversity and clonal selection will be also be key. Three different clones will be planted on three different soil types to deliver ‘structure, texture and fruit’ to the wines born from this new project.

Elgin Vintners are one of the few farms investing in new vineyards in South Africa and Rose believes they will become the top producing Pinot Noir vineyard.
