Harvest by Unico Zelo, joins Berkmann Wine Cellars Australian Portfolio
The brainchild of Brendan and Laura Carter, Harvest is an Australian grower cooperative from Northern Adelaide Hills. Working with local viticulturists, it provides an opportunity to create wine in a profit share model that benefits the grassroots of the industry. Instead of selling their grapes at rock-bottom prices, growers donate them to the Harvest label which then takes care of winemaking, branding, bottling, distribution, sales and marketing. The growers then receive payment for their grapes in the form of fifty percent of the profits, with a share of the remaining profits re-invested to support new sustainable plantings. This symbiotic relationship helps to ensure the future prosperity of the often forgotten growers whilst also guaranteeing delicious wines to drink. And they are vegan too!
Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is a remarkably fresh Sauvignon Blanc, combining flavours of guava, lime, cut grass and basil, with a mouth-watering acidity and an appealing mineral finish. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with six hours maceration on the skins prior to pressing.
Harvest Chardonnay comes from a single vineyard in Birdwood, in the northern Adelaide Hills. Owned by the Porter family, the vines sit at 400m above sea level, on a mixture of clay and quartz. The vines see a good amount of sunlight, meaning ripeness isn’t a problem, but the mineral-inflected soil helps retain acidity. Medium weight with citrus fruit flavours up front, developing into a complex, mineral mid-palate combining notes of gun flint, wet slate and spice.
Lastly, fermentation for Harvest Pinot Gris took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with six hours maceration on the skins prior to pressing. The bold acidity provides a perfect counterpoint to the rich and pleasingly oily texture. Flavours of peach, Asian pear and aniseed follow through to the long harmonious finish.
